The Buffalo District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $6.11 million dollar contract to repair more than 1,300' of deteriorating seawall along the northern section of LaSalle Park.
The seawall has deteriorated over time due to Lake Erie ice and wave action. The local company, Cold Spring Construction of Akron, is expected to start work in mid-September.
Lt. Col. Jason Toth, the Buffalo District’s commander, said the project is critical to protect the Colonel F.G. Ward Pumping Station, which is the primary source of drinking water for Buffalo.
The project will also help protect LaSalle Park from future flooding and is being coordinated with the park's $50 million redevelopment efforts by the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.
The City of Buffalo has provided financial support for the $1.1 million feasibillity and design phase of the Corps project. The rest comes from federal funds.
