The Buffalo Zoo is set to reopen its doors next week after a three-month closure due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The following precautions will be in place until further notice:

  • Temperature checks using no-touch forehead thermometers for all guests and team members
  • Required masks/face coverings for all guests age two and above
  •  A dedicated cleaning and disinfection team and a closure every Tuesday for deep cleaning and sanitation
  • Reduced daily guest capacity to assist with social distancing
  • Required advance online ticket purchase at BuffaloZoo.org, timed entry and touchless, cashless transactions
  • Modifications to some guest pathways and closures of some exhibit features.

The biggest change will be the elimination of walk-up tickets, said communications manager Christian Dobosiewicz.

“The only difference is that everybody will have to reserve and pay for their tickets ahead of time,” he said. “It’ll still be free for members but they still have to reserve the time slot.”

While the zoo is able to reopen, the financial burden it took on as a result of its closure was devastating. Dobosiewicz said the zoo was losing roughly $30,000 per day while its doors were shut, considering roughly 80% of its revenue comes from admissions, events and programs.

“We really rely heavily upon guests, visitors and members coming to our zoo to help keep us financially stable,” he said.

Doors will open to members only on July 2, and to the public on July 3. Tickets can be purchased in advance by going directly to theBuffalo Zoo’s website.
