Collins' prison report date pushed back over coronavirus concerns

WNYC

U.S. District Court Judge Vernon S. Broderick late Wednesday approved a request from former Western New York congressman Chris Collins' legal team to delay his imprisonment for his insider trading conviction because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Collins, 69, was sentenced to 26 months in prison on Jan. 17, and was originally scheduled to begin his term March 17. That was delayed to April 21 based on slow processing and now he won't have to report until June 23.

That happens to be the day of the New York primary and the rescheduled election date to replace him for the remainder of his current term.

Legal papers filed Wednesday requesting the delay stated "Mr. Collins is older than 65 and has additional risk factors, which place him at a high risk of contracting and suffering severe illness from COVID-19 if exposed to the virus."

Mark Wozniak, WBFO's local All Things Considered host, has been at WBFO since mid-1978.
