Remember social distancing even in parks, city officials warn

Buffalo parks are open for passive use only and Mayor Byron Brown said there is a tightening of enforcement to make sure of that.

Brown said there have been violations and police are patroling to remind park users of what is allowed and what isn't.

"Letting people know what is an acceptable use of our parks right now," Brown said. "We want to make sure people are practicing the proper social distancing. We want to make sure there are no mass gatherings in our parks and certainly, right now, contact sports and contact games are not allowed in the parks."

There are signs going up on areas that are closed and parks staff have already made changes, like removing the basketball nets in Delaware Park's basketball courts.

"All of the sports activities are closed. Also, all of the playgrounds and fitness equipment stations are closed," said Park Commissioner Andy Rabb. "We have signs up today. We're putting more signs up and we will have them up before this weekend to remind people that we're asking them to please stay off of the features and the equipment."

Brown said he walks in a variety of city parks and wants other residents to have that exercise and enjoyment of parks, as long as social distancing is observed.
