New procedure for surrending license plates

Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns is introducing a new procedure for motorists who need to surrender vehicle license plates for insurance purposes.

The county's DMV offices have been closed due to the coronavirus, preventing many from simply dropping off the plates.

Kearns said a secure green mailbox has been set up inside the front vestibule of the Rath Building at 95 Franklin St. in downtown Buffalo. Motorists can bring their plates, fill out a provided plate surrender envelope with required information and drop it in the mailbox.

Kearns notes that street parking is currently free downtown and customers are reminded to being their own pen to fill out the envelope.
