The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is getting some financial help to grow the facility.

Plans for expanding the South Buffalo cultural institution got a shot in the arm from Albany on Thursday with the state announcing a $500,000 grant for the project. The organization's president and CEO, David Swarts, said expanding the Botanical Gardens will create new jobs, increase tourism and have a significant economic impact on the community.

"As a result, will ensure that this historic and botanical treasure will survive for another 120 years, providing the public and the community with a better understanding of the unique role that the natural world plays in sustaining life on our planet," Swarts said.

Swarts said plans include a new butterfly exhibit, admission area, cafe, and classrooms.

Work on the $18 million project could get underway at the end of the year.
