Water Authority commissioner abruptly resigns

Erie County Water Authority

Former Amherst Town Attorney E. Thomas Jones has resigned his post as one of three commissioners of the Erie County Water Authority.

The Buffalo News reported Jones' last day on the job was Friday. His term was set to expire in April.

Jones' Republican appointment to the post was approved by the Erie County Legislature in July 2018. Hee was chosen to fill out the remainder of the three-year term of Karl Simmeth. Simmeth resigned in May two years ago after a critical state report of the water authority, which is a public agency. Simmeth has since been appointed Erie County's Republican Party chairman.

Jones said he is giving up the day-to-day frustrations of the job in order to spend time in retirement with his family in Florida.

His replacement will be a GOP appointee, since no more than two members of the same political party can be appointed to the three-member board and the other two board members are Democrats.

Mark Wozniak, WBFO's local All Things Considered host, has been at WBFO since mid-1978.
