Downtown Mahoney Building to be sold at auction next year

New York State Office of General Services

A historic building on downtown Buffalo's Niagara Square will be sold at auction next year. The Walter J. Mahoney State Office Building was built in 1930 on what was the site of Buffalo's first public high school.

A work group made up of city, county and state officials, along with real estate consultants, has determined that the best use of the five-story building at 65 Court Street is no longer state office space. The committee recommended that given the city's competitive real estate landscape, the property be sold on the open market.

State employees will remain in the building for the time being, while 130 other employees who work there are being relocated.

Mayor Byron Brown, in a statement, said the anchor building is "underutilized" and selling it opens the door to new uses, once repurposed.

"As economic investment in Buffalo nears $7 billion since 2012, the downtown property market is extremely strong. The State's decision to sell this iconic, but underutilized anchor building located on Niagara Square, opens the door to another innovative reuse," Brown said.

The state's Office of General Services  says a date and further details on the auction will be announced "in the near future."

The Mahoney Building, which is named for a longtime state legislator and Supreme Court judge, has made it onto the big screen. Scenes from the 2017 movie "Marshall" were filmed inside.
