A former Common Council candidate is voicing his concern about alleged voting irregularities in November’s elections.
Mohammed Alam ran for the Fillmore District seat won by Mitchell Nowakowski. Alam said confusion on his ballot positioning led to his constituents, many non-English speaking, not voting.
“Whatever they did here is totally unofficial, illegal,” Alam said, at a press conference Thursday. “And they’re not supposed to do it.”
Because of language barriers, Alam told his constituents to vote on the 10-I line but said he was moved onto the 10-H line of the ballot, where his supporters wouldn’t look for him. He said the confusion has led his supporters to become skeptical of the voting process.
A spokesman for the Erie County Board of Elections says the ballot discrepancy happened only on a sample ballot and the correction was made before early voting began.
