Northtown Plaza getting new life with groundbreaking of lifestyle center

Thomas O'Neil-White

Ground was broken Tuesday afternoon in Amherst announcing a new retail center in the old Northtown Plaza. Station Twelve features retail shops along with exercise and event space.

This is stage two of Boston-based WS Development’s plan for reviving the corner of Sheridan and Niagara Falls Boulevard. Stage one involved building Whole Foods which sits just east of the proposed retail plaza.

Six buildings are being built on the property. WS Leasing Senior Vice President Brian Sciera called the space a lifestyle center.

“A really pleasant pedestrian experience with wider sidewalks and nice landscaping,” he said. “In this project we will have a central green where we have many, many events every week where we engage the community.”

Sciera says there are many ways to engage the community including events and hiring locally.

WS says the first shops and restaurants will open in October 2020.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Thomas moved to Western New York at the age of 14. A graduate of Buffalo State College, he majored in Communications Studies and was part of the sports staff for WBNY. When not following his beloved University of Kentucky Wildcats and Boston Red Sox, Thomas enjoys coaching youth basketball, reading Tolkien novels and seeing live music.
