The New York State Thruway Authority has announced an agreement with Ontario regarding cashless tolls in the states.
Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll said the agreement takes effect immediately, and allows New York access to Ontario addresses so bills for tolls can be mailed to Ontario drivers.
“The Thruway in Western New York is a gateway for Canadians and New York motorists who frequently travel between our two countries,” said Driscoll. “We thank the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for their cooperation in establishing this important agreement."
Local tolls on Grand Island are already cashless, while tolls in Lackawanna and Williamsville are not. The Thruway plans to convert to all cashless tolls in New York State by the end of 2020.
Prior to the agreement, Ontario drivers could travel through cashless tolls without having to pay. The Thruway Authority did not indicate any other Canadian provinces were covered by the agreement. However, it said a similar agreement is expected with the province of Quebec by the end of the year.
