Amazon set to open a second facility in the Buffalo area

Site work is underway for Amazon's new facility in Tonawanda

Construction is underway for a new Amazon warehouse and distribution center in the Town of Tonawanda.

The new Amazon facility is going up in the Riverview Solar Technology Park, off River Road, in Tonawanda. The project's being headed up by TM Montante Development. Its president Chris Campos says it's been in the works for sometime.

"Amazon is really a perfect for what we're doing at Riverview Solar Technology Park. Amazon is a global company. They're a growing company. They're a company that's really driving the 21st century economy," Campos said.

The facility covers about 24 acres of land and the warehouse, he says, will be 115,000 square feet or about the size of a large supermarket. Amazon opened a larger sortation center in Lancaster, in 2017. Allen Rosenhoch with Invest Buffalo Niagara says the new project "is a big win" for the region.

"When a global leader like Amazon chooses the Buffalo Niagara region for the second time, and in this case with a significant investment of new construction, hundreds of new part time and full time jobs, it's a great day for Western New York," Rosenhoch said.

And he says the company is not seeking incentives from the state or the county. Campos says the new Amazon warehouse will open before the end of 2020.
