North Evans man wins largest Powerball jackpot in Erie County history

New York State Lottery

A North Evans man has won the largest lottery prize in Erie County history.

David Yax was the sole winner of the $80 million jackpot from the Sept. 4 Powerball drawing. Yax said he realized he had the winning ticket and confirmed it by scanning the bar code.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” said Yax. “I checked my ticket early one morning and immediately woke up my wife with the good news.”

Yax said he remained calm and contacted a financial advisor. He elected to receive the prize as a lump sum, which totalled nearly $38.5 million after required withholdings.

Yax said he will set up a trust and invest. He and his wife plan to "travel and just have fun."

He bought the winning ticket in a Tops supermarket on Erie Road in Derby. The previous record jackpot was held by Joseph Cotton of Alden, who won a $33.3 million Lotto jackpot in 1991.
