Lackawanna adds 63 new Hometown Hero banners

City of Lackawanna

Driving down Abbott Road in Lackawanna is a trip down memory lane, as red, white and blue banners proudly proclaim the names and pictures of local veterans. Tuesday evening, a third round of Lackawanna Hometown Hero banners was presented at the American Legion Matthew Glab Post 1477.

Lackawanna added 63 new veteran banners to the ranks of the 153 currently lining Abbott Road. Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski said the new hometown heroes span more than nine decades.

"World War 1, World War 2, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, Operation Enduring Freedom and the Iraq War will be the eras of service covered this year," said Szymanski.

The Hometown Hero Banners were created last year. The first ceremony unveiled 43 banners on Aug. 7, 2018. The second round unveiled 113 banners Memorial Day weekend this year.

"We had so many banner requests the Tuesday after Memorial Day that we decided to have another round this year for a total of 219 to be displayed throughout the city," Szymanski said.
