New lighting going up on Niagara Falls Blvd.

Motorists who travel a busy a section of Niagara Falls Boulevard, in Amherst, will soon have an easier time navigating after dark.

Amherst Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa says work is underway so that 104 LED street lights can be installed along Niagara Falls Boulevard between the 1-290 and Creekside Drive.

Kulpa says the Town is covering most of the $2.2 million capital cost.

"It's poles, lights, foundations," Kulpa said.

Since 2013, six pedestrians have been killed in the busy corridor - which also sees about 300 vehicle accidents every year. While the new lighting will improve the visibility of pedestrians, he says, it will also help with "communication."

"It's one thing to see something. It's another thing to be able see something, or a person, or a car, and see it long enough to predict how it's going to react. Right? So that split second where you are aware of pedestrian, or a car, it's probably too late. So you need to be able to track it. In order to do that you gotta have good lighting - right? because it can't just come into your headlight glow," Kulpa said.

The goal he says is to have the new street lights up and working by the end of November.
