Funding awarded to spiff up Grant Street storefronts

Over $369,000 in grant funding for infrastructure improvement is headed to Buffalo’s West side. The majority of the funds comes from the Buffalo Billion 2 fund and will help six Grant Street businesses restore their storefronts and bring them up to code. The remainder of the funding will support a study of local infrastructure and experiment with new streetscape designs.

Assemblyman Sean Ryan said the success of the project will be measured differently from development in other neighborhoods.

“Success on Grant Street will not be measured by luxury condos. It’s going to be measured by the success of businesses, both old and new, who serve our community every day. It’s measured in the success of the refugee and immigrant community and it’s measured in the pride we’ve seen in growing our great neighborhood,” Ryan said, at a news conference Wednesday.

Both projects will focus on retail business growth, neighborhood walkability, and encouraging the use of bikes and public transportation.

GObike Buffalo and Preservation Buffalo Niagara will lead the infrastructure study and Heart of the City Neighborhoods, a community nonprofit organization, will administer the funds for storefront revitalization.

The awards include the following:
