While the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to make headlines, the City of Good Neighbors continues to live up to its nickname.
State Sen. Tim Kennedy announced Journey’s End Refugee Service is receiving $20,000 in state funding for accessible legal assistance.
“This is a program that works hand-in-hand with refugees across Western New York,” Kennedy said Wednesday. “Ensuring they have access to free, quality legal representation as they navigate processes that include naturalization, permanent residency, family reunification and more.”
With the continued influx of immigrants into the Buffalo area, the importance of being able to navigate through ever-changing immigration policy is at an all-time high.
Babikar Abdallah fled war-torn Sudan and with help from Journey’s End, settled in the Buffalo area. He said the living conditions there became untenable.
“The situation there was very bad because…well, now it is worse than before. There’s no government, no law,” Abdallah said.
Flanked by his wife and two sons, Abdallah said, with a smile, he was recently granted citizenship and is currently working on doing the same for the rest of his family.
