After 4 years of hounding, new Lancaster dog park to break ground

Erie County

Lancaster has gone to the dogs. Officials and their four-legged friends gathered at Como Lake Park in Lancaster Thursday to announce plans for a new dog park.

This would be the third in Erie County since 2012, joining similar spaces at Black Rock Canal Park in Buffalo and Ellicott Creek Park in the Town of Tonawanda.

Spearheaded by the Lancaster Unleashed Organization, the new dog park will be a 1.4-acre space located behind Como Lake Park’s maintenance building, with nearby bathrooms and access to utilities.

The Erie County Parks Department will install surplus fencing material to spur the project and is working with Lancaster Unleashed to finalize architectural plans for the site, after four years of planning.

Under an agreement with the county, the all-volunteer group will be responsible for park maintenance and upkeep and is raising funds to support the project’s groundbreaking later this summer.
