U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is coming to Buffalo.
Ginsburg is coming on August 26, being hosted by the University at Buffalo School of Law, the Bar Association of Erie County, the Western New York Chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, and the Minority Bar Association of Western New York.
She will give a lecture to UB Law School students and will be the special guest at an evening program at Kleinhans Music Hall for members and guests of the area's legal community.
Ginsburg will also receive and Honorary Doctoral Degree in Law from the State University of New York, approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
“Justice Ginsburg’s strong voice supporting gender equality, an independent judiciary, separation of church and state, and human rights deeply resonates with our mission as a law school,” said UB School of Law dean Aviva Abramovsky, in a statement.
The Brooklyn-born Ginsburg, who was nominated to the high court by President Bill Clinton, has served as an associate justice since 1993. Affectionately known as "RBG," she has developed a passionate fanbase, in part thanks to the 2018 documentary of the same name. She has also been parodied on Saturday Night Live in a recurring segment.
“She is a powerful symbol of the most fundamental values of our nation and our legal system,” said Marianne Mariano, president of the Bar Association of Erie County. “We are thrilled and delighted to welcome her to Buffalo.”
