New 'Buffalo Waterfront' brand links Canalside, Outer Harbor

Two of downtown Buffalo’s biggest attractions will now be bridged together under a single brand.

Civic leaders, on Wednesday, officially announced the launch of a new imaging effort being dubbed “Buffalo Waterfront,” a parent brand to the Canalside and Outer Harbor areas.

The new moniker and its accompanying website, buffalowaterfront.com, will allow visitors to find news and information about all the events and activities taking place across the popular destinations.

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation President Steve Ranalli said while the Canalside and Outer Harbor brands were easy enough for most Western New Yorkers to identify, it posed an unneeded hurdle to tourists.

“What we’re finding is that a lot of tourists are coming to the area and they’re searching 'Buffalo' and 'waterfront,'" said Ranalli. “They don’t know the exact places or things to do. So this was really a way to simply allow them to find out about all those things.”

The new Buffalo Waterfront brand has its own logo, website, and social media. But for locals who have grown accustomed to the Canalside moniker, Ranalli said it’s not going anywhere.

“We didn’t want to lose the Canalside brand and we didn’t want to lose the Outer Harbor brand,” Ranalli said. “We’ve been working on those for years, and for a lot of local people they know those names and how to get there.”
