Committee to review Greek culture at UB after suspected hazing

Along with suspending the official activities of all University at Buffalo fraternities and sororities, a committee is being formed to review Greek life at the university. An apparent hazing incident at the Sigma Pi fraternity house in Buffalo's University Heights neighborhood late last week led to the hospitalization of 18-year-old undergraduate student Sebastian Serafin-Bazan.

Vice President of Student Life Scott Weber says the university educates students constantly about UB's zero tolerance policy of hazing starting at orientation.

"I think we have a very thorough and thoughtful, comprehenive educational approach to this issue, but I think we have to continue to evaluate how we're doing that. Is that message being received in a way we would hope it would be received?," Weber said at a news briefing Monday.

Weber is requesting a report and recomendations before the start of the fall semester.

"I think this is so urgent to us that I think that's a reasonable timeframe for a thoughtful and positive direction for us," Weber said.

Weber says the committee will be reviewing the culture of Greek life at UB and assessing their status in contributing to the university's values.

Serafin-Bazan, who is from Westchester County, remains in critical condition at Buffalo General Medical Center. Buffalo police are investigating and asking for assistance from anyone with information on the incident.
