Bennett forum explores consequences of gun violence

Young people in Buffalo were encouraged Saturday to choose a different path when it comes to gun violence.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn was joined by community activists at Bennett High School for a conversation about the dangers gangs and guns pose. Flynn said it's all about being proactive.

"If we can get to some of these kids before they get involved in gang culture, then we can not only save their lives, but the lives of others," Flynn said.

Flynn said his message is especially important in the wake of the recent fatal shooting of an innocent 12-year-old boy in Buffalo.

Among those speaking was Eric Rawls, who grew up on the East Side and shared his story about how gun violence affected his life. Rawls said "experience is the best teacher."

Flynn said it's important that young people hear they can become lawyers, police officers or business professionals.
