The IRS Commissioner has until Wednesday to comply with a request to turn over President Trump's tax returns. The request was made by the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee - which Congressman Brian Higgins sits on. With more here's WBFO's Chris Caya.
Higgins points out that Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal is one of only three federal officials who can request tax returns from the Treasury Secretary and the IRS.
"I would expect that the White House and Treasury Secretary would comply with that request although you hear that there are some in the White House are saying that that's not going to happen," Higgins said.
But the recent Mueller Report on Russian interference in the 2016 election, Higgins says, raises more questions than it answers. And he says the Ways and Means Committee Chairman is a professional and very discreet.
"And I think that he has made a very reasonable request that I think demands a reasonable response and that is to turn them over. I think that they will be carefully scrutinized. I think it's more information to make a determination consistant with the Congress's oversight responsibility as to whether or not any conflicts exist relative to his personal or business tax return," Higgins said.
And he says requesting the president's tax returns for the past six years was done within the law.
