Construction to impact Allentown Art Festival

Chris Caya WBFO News

Buffalo's popular Allentown Art Festival is just two months away and this year, crowds and vendors will be dealing the reconstruction of Allen Street.

The installation of a new water main, sewer lines and other utilities on Allen, between Main Street and Delaware Avenue, should wrap up by June. After that, work will begin on a new road bed, curbing and sidewalks.

Allen Street is closed to traffic between North Pearl and Main Street.

Acting Public Works Commissioner Michael Finn says throughout the project, Allen Street will remain open to pedestrians. But Finn says the Allentown Art Festival will be limited to Allen between Delaware Avenue and Franklin Street.

"Typically, I think, it goes a little bit farther. But this section we're looking at being under heavy construction at that point. We'll button up this section, between Delaware and Franklin, so we can have the event for this year. But obviously they'll still be able to use Delaware which, I think, is their primary," Finn said.

Buffalo's Acting Public Works Commissioner Michael Finn and other officials met with reporters at Allen and North Pearl Streets to discuss the project on Monday.

Mayor Byron Brown says plenty of police will be on hand for the Allentown Art Festival "to make sure that pedestrians, vehicles, bicyclists can all use the street in a safe and efficient way."

Phase one of rebuilding Allen Street, between Main and Delaware, is expected to cost $6.3 million and be complete next year.
