The Buffalo Zoo is mourning the death of a giraffe who was born at the zoo more than two decades ago and lived there her entire life.
Earlier this week, zoo officials announced Agnes, 24, was receiving end-of-life care and comfort in her final days. She had been suffering from advanced arthritis and other health issues and was not responding to treatment. On Thursday, the zoo announced her death.
Agnes was born at the zoo in 1994. She produced several offspring including zoo resident Zuri. Zoo president and CEO Norah Fletchall said Agnes was "deeply loved" and will be missed.
“Agnes has lived a long life and will leave an even longer legacy. It’s a testament to the exceptional work of our teams here at the Zoo that Agnes has lived well into her golden years," Fletchall said.
The zoo's giraffe exhibit was closed Thursday. It is expected to reopen on Friday.
