St. Patrick's Day traditions are playing out this weekend. The Old Neighborhood St.Patrick's Day Parade was held yesterday in South Buffalo. The city parade will kick off today at 2, running along Delaware Avenue from Niagara Square to North Street. One tradition that will be broken is that the leader of Buffalo's Catholic diocese will not appear in the procession.
Bishop Richard Malone has faced criticism for his handling of the sex abuse scandal plaguing the diocese, and he has chosen Father David Richards, Chaplain of the United Irish American Association, as his replacement.
Malone will be celebrating mass at Buffalo's St. Joseph's Cathedral before the parade, and protestors calling for Malone's resignation will gather across from the church.
Streets surrounding the parade route will be closed to traffic beginning at noon.
