Following a Senate report that found Russian trolls influenced the 2016 election, advocates are urging people to join the #LogOutFacebook movement.
The protest is being led by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It's urging Facebook users to logout of the social media platform for a week over Russians using Facebook and Instagram to suppress African-American turnout in the 2016 election.
"It is something that we need to stand in opposition to," said Rev. Mark Blue, the NAACP Buffalo Branch President. He says organizers are also concerned about data breaches and Russian trolls stealing subscribers' personal information from Facebook.
"Not only do they need to update all of their security but they also need to make sure that those who are doing these breaches aren't using the data for their own propaganda," Blue said.
Unfortunately, he says, lot of people were kept in the dark and didn't know what was happening until it was too late.
"It's very important that we stand in opposition to those who are especially making money off of the minorities, African-Americans. I mean they're doing it. They're making beaucoups amounts of money. And still we're dealing with these type of breaches that are effecting our security, effecting our integrity of life," Blue said.
In a blog post, the company's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said, Facebook is taking the Senate report "incredibly seriously." And "we know that we need to do more."
