The fatal shooting of Rafael "Pito" Rivera, by a Buffalo Police Officer, last Wednesday, topped Tuesday's meeting of the Common Council's Police Oversight Committee.
Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood says the shooting is being looked at by the Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs and the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
"Right now, I don't have any details to share with the public, right now. But it's still being investigated," Lockwood said.
Committee member and Council President, Darius Pridgen says, it's important for the District Attorney's Office to provide constant consistant updates on the investigation because the public gets frustrated not knowing.
"That's when it's almost a like a tea pot without an opening. The steam builds and builds," Pridgen said.
Several of his colleagues agreed - including Majority Leader David Rivera. A former Buffalo Police Detective, Rivera says the only way the Police advisory group can build trust, transparency and accountability is by working with the police and communicating with the public.
The shooting was caught on video. But BPD Captain Jeff Rinaldo says the evidence was subpeoned by a grand jury and legally it can not be released by the police or D.A.
