McDonalds in Jamestown temporarily closed after health complaints

A McDonalds on 2803 North Main Street in Jamestown is being temporarily closed while the New York State Department of Health and the Chautauqua County Health Department investigate reports of multiple illnesses. Since August 4th at least 22 people have reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea according to the New York State Health Department. The location's breakfast sandwiches have been sent to a lab in Albany for testing. While many are pending, preliminary testing has come back negative so far.

Chautauqua County public Health Director Christine Schuyler said an astute nurse in an emergency room noticed a pattern and tipped them off.

"From there, public health nurses in our environmental health staff conduct an investigation which includes interviewing people who have complained of the illness. Then we work with the state health department to follow up our next steps," Schuyler said.

No other McDonald’s locations are involved in this investigation. There has been no evidence found to suggest the illness can be spread from person to person.

Schuyler said McDonalds has been very cooperative every step of the way.

"They have been working very hard all day there today with a professional cleaning service. We have had county staff on site all day. I think they can probably get through this rather quickly. I would say not more than a day or two that I would assume that they will be not serving food," she said.

The Department of Health asks anyone who may have become sick while eating at the location since August 4th to contact the Chautauqua County Health Department at 716-753-4483 or CCHEALTH@co.Chautauqua.ny.us.
