Posting notices is costing local taxpayers a lot of money. Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw says, on average, it costs about $160,000 a year to publish public and legal notices in local newspapers.
Mychajliw says, he was surprised to see, in a new report, exactly how much money the County is spending on it.
"This is not the Stone Age, where we need to post notices on the side of a cave. We live in the internet age and we should maximize technology to reach more people and cut costs."
But Mychajliw says, state laws going back to the 1940s mandate the expense. So it's up to Albany to change it.
He says the County could find a better use for the money including providing more resources for culturals and hiring more workers for Child Protective Services, Sheriff's Deputies or laborers to fix county roads.
