It is a time-honored tradition in Western New York. Tuesday will be Kids Day in Western New York, a once-a-year day when the Buffalo News publishes a special edition, with some proceeds to benefit Children's Hospital and other local children's charities.

This will be the 39th year volunteers will be out selling the special Kids Day edition of the newspaper. Kaleida and Great Lakes Health President and CEO Jody Lomeo says it is surprising how much has been raised in nearly four decades of the event.

"It's actually $4.6 million has gone to support children in this community," said Lomeo, "and so when people think about what's a dollar really gonna do, what's that extra change gonna do in the dashboard or in the counsel there, it means everything to us. It means everything to those children."

There is a chance of showers Tuesday, mainly in the afternoon. No matter the weather, though, Lomeo urged Western New Yorkers to be "extra careful" driving on area roads. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown echoed that warning.

"People will be selling newspapers on street corners and in front of businesses all across Buffalo and Erie County. There will literally be hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers out on the street," said Brown. "So we ask you to exercise caution on that dat. There will be people at corners and we want to make sure people have a great time, a safe time."

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says Kids Day represents a great pulling-together of the community.

"We are talking about the health and welfare of our youngest constituents, sometimes our littlest constituents, and the youngest constituents just a day or two old, who need the incredible care and exists and is offered at Oishei Children's Hospital," said Poloncarz. "So next Tuesday is an important day. We ask everyone, when you have the opportunity, when you see someone out on the street selling a Kids Day edition, buy an edition and if you've got some extra cash, buy more than one."

Poloncarz says that extra dollar can make a difference in a child's life.
