Buffalo named among best cities for Easter celebrations

In the days leading up to Easter, thousands of Western New Yorkers will travel to the Broadway Market to pick up supplies for their celebrations. There, shoppers can buy everything from pierogies and polish sausage, to unique items such as butter lambs.

The Queen City’s rich traditions and affordable prices helped earn it a spot among the nation’s best cities to celebrate Easter. According to a survey conducted by the personal finance website Wallethub,  Buffalo ranks 21 out of 100 cities graded.

Cities were evaluated based on four categories: Easter observers per capita, traditions, activities for kids and weather. A dozen metrics were then used to determine a grade out of 100 for each of the four categories.

WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez said Buffalo scored well on most of the 12 sub-categories.

“Buffalo ranked really highly here for its large share of a Christian population; that was given a double weight here and that was actually in the top 15 where Buffalo’s concerned,” Gonzalez said. “Also, [Buffalo has] a lot of churches per capita. When it comes to traditions, because brunch, restaurant, candy, chocolate and flower costs are lower than many cities on this list that actually gave it a boost as well.”

Buffalo scored well on many categories, but unpredictable spring weather hindered its grade.

“When it comes to Easter weather just in terms of the forecast and precipitation and the difference between the normal temperatures on Easter, that’s where Buffalo ranked 99th, second last there,” Gonzalez said. “That’s the only category where Buffalo did not do as well, which I’m sure is no surprise.”

Gonzalez added that many cities with younger populations offer more Easter activities for children, a factor that contributed to Buffalo’s inability to crack the Top 10 on the roster.

Buffalo’s rank went down from 7 in 2016, but Gonzalez  said changes in grading criteria were a contributing factor.

The survey named New York City, St. Louis and Chicago as the top three cities to celebrate Easter.
