Schumer seeking tax credits for Canalside children's museum

Chris Caya WBFO News

At Canalside in Buffalo Monday, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said he is pushing to get financing for the new Explore & More Children's Museum over the finish line.

Schumer said he is going to use "whatever clout" in Washington he has to secure New Market Tax Credits for the $35 million project.

"Which will be a huge boost to Explore and More and really help the waterfront, and Canalside, develop even better bigger and stronger than it is now," Schumer said.

Explore & More CEO Michelle Urbanczyk said even with the tax credits, they still have more to go to cross the finish line.

"We're about $7 million shy. So this will get us right to where we need to be. So we're still moving full-steam ahead with our fundraising efforts and we won't know where we land probably until July," Urbanczyk said.

According to Explore & More, the four-story museum, being constructed in the shadow of the Skyway, will feature exhibits designed to teach children about hydropower, the Erie Canal, sustainable food and the history of Buffalo. It is expected to open in early 2019 and draw 250,000 visitors in the first year alone.
