Deep freeze returns, flood warning for Allegany River in Olean

With the return of frigid temperatures to Western New York, the threat of flooding resulting from last week's brief thaw has eased. The remaining trouble spot is the Allegany River in Olean.

The National Weather Service has posted a flood warning for that portion of the river through Monday morning. At 8am Sunday, meteorologists said the Allegany was running above flood stage at 11.4 feet and slowly receding. There is some minor flooding on local roads and farm lands in the Olean area. The Allegany is expected to fall below the 10-foot flood stage by Monday morning.

In Buffalo, a Red Cross relief shelter was once again open at the Winchester Elementary School Saturday night for anyone still affected by the Friday ice jam flooding in South Buffalo.

Bitter cold temperatures continue Sunday with highs only in the teens and lows Sunday night once again approaching zero.

A general snowfall is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon into early Tuesday, but accumulations are not expected to be significant.
