Canalside offers more to do during the World Juniors

Chris Caya WBFO News

The list of outdoor activities at Canalside, in downtown Buffalo, is a little longer this winter. But the new attractions are only up for a limited time.

If you're looking for ways to keep the kids busy during the Christmas break, head to Canalside.

"It's a great time to celebrate the winter weather here in Buffalo and we've got a Championship Village set up outside," said Don Heins with Pegula Sports and Entertainment. He says it was put up as part of the World Junior Hockey Championship underway at KeyBank Center and HarborCenter.

"It has a Olympic Village type feel that fans can come down here before or after their games. Or, if they don't have a ticket to the game, just to come down and enjoy some fun winter activities. This whole area of Canalside is set up like this," Heins said.

Outdoor activities include a hockey skills center and "Snowzilla" - a giant toboggan slide.

"Snowzilla. You gotta check it out. It's 40 feet high. 70 feet long. And it's got a real great outdoor experience to it - in a tube you'd slide down that," Heins said.

To warm up afterwards, there's a climate controlled pavillion with food and beverages, live music and other entertainment. Heins says Championship Village is free and open to the public and will be in place throughout the tournament which runs through January 5.
