USS Little Rock commissioning sold out

U.S. Navy

People thinking about getting tickets for next month's commissioning of the USS Little Rock LCS-9 have missed the boat. The event's organizers have suspended ticket registration.

Since the commissioning date of the USS Little Rock LCS-9 was announced a month ago, nearly 9,000 people requested tickets.

"Because this is such a unique event we wanted to leave the website opened as long as possible. But we just reached a point where the responsible thing to do was to shut it down," said Maurice Naylon, chairman of the ship's commissioning committee.

The December 16 event is historic, Naylon said, because it's the first time a new ship is commissioned alongside her namesake. The original USS Little Rock is on permanent display at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park, next to Canalside.

"This is something for the ages. This is something that our community is going to remember for a long time. And we competed against Mayport, Savannah, Norfolk, you know, cities that are more commonly thought of as Navy destinations. So the fact that Buffalo secured this commissioning, it's a real feather in our cap," Naylon said.

Even though the event is sold out, Canalside and the Naval Park will be open to the public during Commissioning Week.

"The ship arrives on the 8th of December, which is a Friday, and it'll probably remain in Buffalo through the 18th or maybe the 19th. So people will have a chance to come down and view the ship," Naylon said. Tours will be limited to students, Scouts, Sea Cadets, and the corporate sponsors funding the week-long event.
