A fully restored diner is now open for business in Buffalo's Larkinville neighborhood. The Swan Street Diner, near the corner of Seneca Street, began serving breakfast Tuesday morning.
Restaurant partner Harry Zemsky says the diner was originally built near Rochester as the Newark Diner. It has since been fully restored.
"Most people come in here envisioning they're going to see the stainless steel classic which is really the '50s era. But this is built in 1937, so the '30s era. All the trims are porcelain and mahogany and tile. You won't see any stainless once you're past the kitchen and I think it really lends kind of a slightly warmer feel," Zemsky said.
The restaurant's General Manager, Amanda Amico, is also the owner of Amy's Truck, a popular food truck. Amico says the diner's specialty is comfort food.
"Classic diner fare, but we're doing it well and from scratch. Cooking chickens back there everyday for chicken noodle soup and pot pies and things. We have eggs, home fries, toast and omelettes, good sandwiches that we're putting on Mazurek's bread. So we're trying to use local purveyors," Amico said.
The Swan Street Diner is at 700 Swan St., directly across from Larkin Square, and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
