Two injured young hikers are home from hospital

Jake (left) and Xander Green are getting stronger by the day, the family says.

Two injured boys whose parents died while hiking in Zoar Valley Gorge are both home from the hospital and recovering.

William and Amanda Green fell to their deaths while hiking with their boys in August. Their son, 4-year-old Alexander - known as Xander - sustained serious internal injuries, multiple fractures and a head injury. Their son, 7-year-old Jacob - known as Jake - sustained a broken arm and ankle.

The family again issued a statement Tuesday, thanking the community "for their thoughts, prayers and well wishes." They said the support received "has truly helped" and how the boys are "getting stronger by the day is nothing short of a miracle." However, they would be issuing no further statements.

"Our family will never forget the kindness and love we've received, and we will do everything we can to honor it and pass it on in every way possible. Thank you."

The Erie County Sheriff's Office passed along best wishes to the boys "for a full and speedy recovery" and said the investigation into the incident remains open.
