New York State taxpayers could find themselves paying $700,000 in legal fees for a convicted Albany lawmaker. Former Senate Deputy Majority Leader Tom Libous was convicted in 2015 on a felony charge of lying to the FBI. Libous was investigated for using his office in landing his son with a downstate law firm and for shady financial arrangements to cover his son's salary.

Libous, who had cancer, died while an appeal was filed. This forced the state to dismiss the charge, likely leaving taxpayers to foot the legal bill.
