The Niagara Falls Water Board said it detected a water main break on the Goodyear chemical plant property in the City of Niagara Falls late Thursday night, which resulted in a loss of system pressure affecting local residential and commercial water customers in the service area.
Multiple repair crews were called to the 56th Street site to assess the leak situation and attempt to determine the size and scope of the rupture. The NFWB said it also was in contact with other government agencies and departments, including the New York State Department of Health, to advise them of the water main break occurrence.
For a time, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster asked city residents to conserve water until such a time that a more concise timetable for restoration could be determined.
However, as of about 4:30 a.m. Friday, the Mayor said that request was no longer necessary. The leak had been "contained."
As a result of the break, Niagara County’s emergency interconnect was activated, which helped feed water reserves at the NFWB’s Buffalo Street treatment facility. No specific timetable has yet been identified regarding the return of water pressure for customers.
