AP awards WBFO Outstanding News Operation in Radio

Eileen Koteras Elibol

WBFO has been named Outstanding News Operation in radio by the New York State Associated Press, snaring three first place awards, eight second place awards and four third place awards in the annual AP awards competition.

This is the fourth consecutive year The Associated Press has awarded WBFO the Outstanding

News Operation in its radio class, which covers stations across the state outside of New York City.

WBFO won first place honors for its coverage of the inferno that engulfed the former Bethlehem Steel facility in Lackawanna last autumn, a series of reports that tracked efforts to transform Buffalo into “Hockey Heaven” and a sports feature that examined how the “old school mentality” about hockey head injuries is slow to change.

During a June 3 awards ceremony in Saratoga Springs, The AP also honored WBFO in a dozen other journalistic categories, including reporting excellence, newscast excellence, digital presence, documentaries, investigative reporting, news series and use of sound.
