$4.6 million earmarked for Outer Harbor project

WBFO News File Photo

Buffalo's Outer Harbor will be getting some improvements.Congressman Brian Higgins announced Saturday that $4.6 million in federal funding has been approved for dredging and repairs to the breakwall.

Higgins says Outer Harbor destinations won't succeed if they're not protected.

"You see what damage lake waters can do with respect to Lake Ontario," Higgins said. "This project at the Outer Harbor will insure that those areas are protected from a similar fate."

High lake water levels in Lake Ontario has caused lakeshore flooding and erosion in recent weeks.

The breakwall, which protects strong Lake Erie waves from hitting the shoreline, hasn't seen any substantial reconstruction in 70 years.

Higgins said the breakwall project will take 12 to 18 months to complete.
