Tonawanda Housing Authority chastised in scathing state audit

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has released a scathing audit of the Tonawanda Housing Authority. His report excoriates staff in that office for neglecting the neediest clients for low-cost housing while showing preference to other applicants. He states, "For years, the authority has not operated in a fair and equitable, efficient or transparent manner and has not been fulfilling its duty to provide low-cost housing to this community."

The audit also cites elderly residents being denied access to available units. Some staff members were found to have made off-color remarks about certain applicants and clients, and office computers were put at risk being used to view pornography, social media and shopping sites.

According to DiNapoli, "The actions of certain Tonawanda Housing Authority employees are shameful."
