Wintry blast: Frigid cold and Lake Effect snows

A Lake Effect Snow warning is posted for Chautauqua, Wyoming and Cattaraugus Counties until 7 a.m. Friday.  A Winter Weather Advisory remains posted for the rest of Western New York through 5 a.m. Friday.   

Route 5 remains closed in both directions in the Town of Hamburg from Camp Road to Big Tree Road due to winter weather conditions.

WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley was along the Lake Erie shoreline Thursday afternoon where winds are whipping the Lake waters onto Route 5. Police have that section blocked to motorists.

Route 5 remains closed in both directions in the Town of Hamburg from Camp Road to Big Tree Road due to winter weather conditions.

Expect snow squalls to move through the Buffalo and Niagara Falls region Thursday afternoon and evening.  It will be winding with gusts up to 45 miles per hour.

Lake Effect snow is expected Thursday evening and could be heavy at times with additional accumulations of two to three inches. 

Temperatures will be frigid Thursday with lows of only five to 10-above zero. There will be a chance of snow showers Friday afternoon in the Buffalo Niagara region.

In the Lake Effect Snow Warning area, snow could accumulate an inch or less Thursday afternoon with one to two inches by the evening hours.
