The Genesee Gateway has evolved from a crumbling stretch of buildings into a welcoming zone of development. The final phase of a $3.5 million streetscape project is underway which will put the finishing touches on what Mayor Byron Brown calls "an important stretch of roadway in downtown Buffalo." State Senator Tim Kennedy lauded the persistence of one resident who cemented the block even during its bleakest times.

"The former Alternative School was empty, and the dilapidated buildings falling down around Eddie Brady's, who, by the way, stuck it out through the tough times. And still, you can go to Eddie Brady's for a fired bologna and a beer. Now, Eddie Brady has neighbors, and you see an expanded community that's taking shape before our very eyes."

The project is being funded with public and private investments. The City of Buffalo has contributed $1 million in bond funds.

New paving, lighting, sidewalks and improved safety developments for pedestrians and bicyclists are part of the overall project.
