Cuomo pledges funding to bring carousel to Canalside

Chris Caya WBFO News

A rare carousel, that was made in North Tonawanda more than 90 years ago, is moving closer to having a new home at Canalside. In Buffalo on Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, that the state is providing a $1.2 million challenge grant for the project.

The President of the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, Laurie Hauer-LaDuca says, the park-style, menagerie carousel, is currently in Ohio being restored. Hauer-LaDuca says the work should take about 18-months.

"And we are looking to have our building design and constructed in parallel time frame with the restoration of the carousel. So ideally if we could break ground at the end of next summer it's very possible to have the carousel operational by May of 2018," Hauer-LaDuca said.

The new home will provide year ‘round access to the carousel. It's expected to be solar powered and located on the Dunbar Block next to Clinton's Dish.
