The body that oversees lawyers in Ontario has recommended that compensation to clients who are cheated by a lawyer be increased. The Law Society of Upper Canada has determined that the compensation cap be raised to half-a-million dollars. The last increase came in 2008, when the cap was boosted to $150,000. Over the past 2 years, nearly $8 has been paid out to 260 claimants.
More than $1 million were doled out to 35 clients of a single Toronto lawyer who stole money from trust accounts before fleeing the country.
