With an energetic and engaging style, host Susan Arbetter has lifted The Capitol Pressroom into a vital voice in Albany politics in just seven years. "There are few stops that the politicians will make and my show is one of them and I'm very proud of that," said Arbetter, who will appear with Jim Heaney of the Investigative Post on Tuesday, September 13 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
The governor, legislative leaders, lobbyists, public interest groups, all of those who influence state politics find their way to The Capitol Pressroom. It can be heard every weeknight on WBFO.
"I have to say if it wasn't for WBFO and Mark Scott, your former news director, that never would have happened. Because you guys gave me a chance," Arbetter recalled.
"Before I had even developed a program, WBFO said it would carry it."
Now, 20 stations carry The Capitol Pressroom.
"I want to educate people to vote so they actually know the issues and want to go the voting booth in November and cast a vote," said Arbetter, who displays a keen understanding of the complexities of state issues during her show while keeping the program alive with a keen sense of humor. Still, she sees the need for more scrutiny of a political culture that has been prone to scandal.
"I'm not sure if I see that much more transparency. In fact, I don't think I do at all," Arbetter offered.
"I'm thrilled that there are new independent journalism entities like Investigative Post, like the teams at different public broadcasters around the state, that are able to keep a check on what's happening behind the scenes in Albany."
