With more than 150 emergency cases in Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway in August, Buffalo's U.S. Coast Guard is urging safety to those planning to enjoy the water over Labor Day weekend.
The Coast Guard says the holiday marks the traditional end of the beach and boating season across the nation. It also is usually one of the busiest times for the Coast Guard.
Although 20 lives were saved and another 186 people were assisted, three lives were lost on the lakes in August. The Coast Guard says all three were drowning victims and were not wearing life jackets.
They also remind boaters that alcohol legal limits apply to the water as well as the road.
