Hikers rescued unharmed from Niagara Gorge

Niagara Parks Police Service

Niagara Parks Police Sunday last night responded to a 911 call for two stranded hikers in the Niagara Gorge, north of the Rainbow Bridge. The two men had reportedly entered the gorge at 8:30 p.m. by climbing over the retaining wall in the area of Hiram Street in Niagara Falls, ON and made their way down into the gorge.

Police say the men became quickly disoriented as darkness set in and were unable to make their way out of the difficult terrain.  They began to yell for help, which was heard from the U.S. side of the river, and the call for assistance was routed through New York State Parks Police.

Members of the Niagara Parks Police High Angle River Team located the two hikers in the gorge and they were later hoisted out to safety by the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

The two men were not injured and alcohol did not appear to be factor.  Both men were charged with trespassing.
